Copyleft

As per its official definition, “Copyleft is a general method for making a programme (or other work) free, and requiring all modified and extended versions of the programme to be free as well.”

It began in the 80s in favour of Richard Stallman’s free software and went on to expand to other sectors of communication and creativity.

It works similar to the Open Source Movement in the way that, by implementing these licenses for their own work, copyright holders can “build communities that collaboratively share and improve those copylefted creative works” (gnu.org).

Copyleft claims that “the simplest way to make a programme free software is to put it in the public domain, uncopyrighted” (gnu.org).
