With the digitalization of work, new technologies have brought significant changes to the modern workplace. One of these developments is the use of gamification to enhance employee engagement. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate using game-like strategies in non-gaming context, such as business, and explore the key benefits and challenges of using gamification at the workplace.
Gamification is an important issue to discuss since according to research firm Gartner, “gamification has emerged as a significant trend in recent years” and is “a powerful tool to engage employees, customers and the public to change behaviors, develop skills and drive innovation.” (Gartner, 2016)
Karl M. Kapp, the author of The Gamification of Learning and Instruction: Game-based Methods and Strategies for Training and Education, describes the term gamification as “using game-based mechanics, aesthetics and game thinking to engage people, motivate action, promote learning, and solve problems” (Kapp, 2012, 10).
In 2012 Deloitte noted that “serious gaming simulations and game mechanics such as leaderboards, achievements, and skill-based learning are becoming embedded in day-to-day business processes, driving adoption, performance, and engagement.” (Peterson, 2012)
